G325 Theory (Representation and Media Language)

Hi all, Happy New Year!

I'm starting preparation for G325 and looking at theories to study.

I was wondering what theories people use for Representation and Media Language? I've got Stuart Hall, and Bordwell and Thompson respectively, but not a lot else.

I'm thinking maybe Mulvey for Representation? Semiotic theorists for Media Language?

I'm OK for Audience/Genre/Narrative theory as I did them at Uni (happy to share resources etc should people want).

Any advice appreciated!

Cheers,

Sam

Hi Sam,

I got your email but I still can't email you back! I think it may be a firewall at your end. Do you have another contact email?

Any chance you could put a link or upload some of the resources onto the section on this board?

On a slightly different strand, does anyone have / know any links for exemplar essays to question 1 of the G325 Critical Perspectives exam?

There are exemplar answers to section A and B of G325 on the main OCR Media Studies website if you look under the support materials heading and for Unit G325 Exemplar Answers.

media language hasn't come up yet and I think representation was for a Jan paper for which there are very few entries

Thanks.

How important is it that students understand Realist/Constructivist/Functionalist and Determinist approaches to Representation? I'm worried it may be too much for them and am wondering if I should just concentrate more on the concept and how they constructed their own representations, rather than going too theory heavy. Any advice much appreciated!

I wouldn't go that far! They do need to distance themselves by talking about characters in relation to the concept rather than just taking us through how they made them look like a particular type, though.
