Level 2 Unit 7 Database Design 2010 Spec Part 4

So final instalment:  If you are running a VLE that accepts Scorm resources, I've written the Gamez Frenzy Assignment in a self contained course.  It sits easily on VLEs like Moodle but could easily be unpacked and used as offline HTML pages.  Contact me if you would like the 3Mb zipped content.

Any similarity to other games rental companies trading as Gamez Frenzy is purely coincidental.

Nicola,

The problem is that if you have a set of data that can be imported it is, almost by definition, organised in a field structure already and it is this that I think we need to get the students to define.

Dave

Absolutely Dave.  Not only is the teacher defining the fields required but also the tables, which is probably the most important discriminator between Pass and Merit - the ability to create a design for multiple tables.

Hi, thanks for your replies.

i have improted the data but not assigned any data types/primary keys/input masks/combo boxes or validation rules, they have designed these themselves and can make the changes/add rules to these tables including creating the relationships.  Will this be ok then?

Thanks

Nicola

Hi

i wondered if anyone can help with AO2? do pupils have to show evidence of importing the data to the tables?  it would help me timewise if they could open the created tables and just add the validation rules/combo boxes and input masks to the data provided.

Please help :$

thanks

Under the new spec I see no requirement to demonstrate how the tables were populated; although it says "A form will be created to enter data in the table", it doesn't specify that it has to be used to enter *all* the data. I would suggest that as long as at least one record is entered through the form (which of course would also form part of the testing required for AO6) that would be sufficient.

The guidance does suggest that a minimum of 30 records but again doesn't specify how those records are added to the tables.

Although Dave is right to say that there is no requirement to demonstrate HOW the tables were populated the AO is about constructing a database that the candidate has designed.  This means setting up the tables from scratch and entering the data.  The Knowledge, Understanding and Skills section of the unit specification lists the skills that candidates need to be taught before they embark upon assessment.  Simply adding validation to existing tables does not meet this requirement.  As it is expected that candidates' designs for their database will not be the same then their requirements for data tables will be different too.
